Ine no Funaya is known as one of the most beautiful villages in Japan with traditional houses located by the bay.
Ine town is located 130 km north of the ancient city of Kyoto. The first houses here were built in the 1700s, following the floating house architecture, called Funaya, with a typical material of wood, close to the sea. Photo: Forevervanny.
Ine’s coast was once part of a long trade route from the Eurasian continent to Kyoto. However, over the centuries, this place seems to escape the process of urbanization and become one of the last traditional fishing villages of Japan. Currently, the village still has 230 floating houses preserved intact to this day, making this place considered as “Venice of Japan”. Photo: Laurawheatley.

The first floor of the Funaya house is often used by people as a place for fishing, processing and drying fish … the second floor is a living place. The lifestyle in Ine is mainly related to the fishing and agricultural industries that have existed since time immemorial. Today, many houses are converted into restaurants, guesthouses or bars for tourists. Some works have been repaired and expanded compared to the original. There are 2 ways to visit Ine no Funaya, that is to take a fisherman’s fishing boat or canoe. Each canoe trip lasts 30 minutes, costs 1,000 yen (200,000 VND). Photo: U3K-Y.
