Sagano is famous for thousands of green bamboo trees and rich flora and fauna.
Located in the western part of the ancient capital of Kyoto, Sagano Bamboo Forest is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan. Sagano Bamboo Forest, also known as Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, was famous from the Heian period (794-1185). At that time, aristocratic merchants often chose this forest as a favorite resort. The sound of bamboo leaves rustling as the wind blows creates a unique sound like a whisper of wind, impressing visitors. Tenryu-ji Temple on the outside of the bamboo forest entrance is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Kyoto’s five major temples. Tenryu-ji Temple was built in 1339, during the Muromachi period (1338-1573). Admission is 500 yen (more than 100,000 dong), an extra 300 yen (about 65,000 dong) if guests want to enter the buildings. You can also visit the Okochi Sanso mansion nearby. This is the old mansion of famous actor Okochi Denjiro (1896-1962), located behind the bamboo groves of Sagano. The campus has a number of gardens and various buildings such as residences, tea houses and gates. Guests are not allowed to enter the housing. Admission is 1,000 yen (more than 210,000 VND), ticket includes tea and snacks. The best time to visit is in autumn with red maple leaves or spring when cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
