GION FESTIVAL

Gion Festival is one of the biggest festivals in Japan, held at Yasaka Temple in July every year. With the meaning of health demand and dispelling epidemics, people organized sacrifices to keep the spirit of melancholy, fear and comfort and serenity. One of the most unique activities of the festival is the Yamaboko Yunko parade on July 17 through the bustling streets of Tokyo. In addition to the parade, Gion also has many activities of preparing, playing, meeting very rich such as the cleansing ritual Mikoshi, Hoko and Kama palanquin erection ceremony. Gion Festival lasts throughout July.
